Cut to the present day, when Westercombe Manor has long since burned down, and 87-year-old Maud lives in a cottage on the estate. When she is rushed into hospital, her granddaughters, Saffie and Pearl travel to be with her. Once close, the two cousins have hardly spoken since the summer when everything went horribly wrong. Neither of them are happy about being there but as they try to piece together what happened to Maud, they find themselves wondering if she has been keeping secrets from them all along. A dusty old trunk in the attic leads them towards the truth… and a story far beyond what either of them could ever have imagined…
This is a novel about friendship, ambition, love, betrayal, and all the stories we tell ourselves and others. It’s a multi-generational novel, spanning almost 100 years, and the book that I’ve most enjoyed writing. I really hope you enjoy it!
